First time at a real barbershop? Read this first.

Most of what makes a barbershop feel intimidating the first time is just unfamiliarity — nobody hands you a rulebook. Here's the actual rulebook, from a shop that walks new people through it every week.

Walk-in or appointment: book if you can

Walk-ins are welcome, but you're taking whatever gap is open, and on a Saturday afternoon that gap might be an hour out. Booking ahead guarantees your barber and your time slot — it takes under a minute online and costs the same as walking in. If you're set on a specific barber because of a photo you saw, book them directly rather than hoping they're free when you show up.

What to actually say when they ask "what are we doing today"

Don't just say a haircut. Say three things: the length you want left on top (in inches or "the same as it grows out to now"), where you want the sides handled (fade, taper, or just cleaned up — see our fade guide if you don't know the vocabulary yet), and one reference, whether that's a photo on your phone or "like my last cut but shorter." A good barber will ask follow-up questions from there. If they don't ask anything at all, say more than you think you need to.

The consult conversation, for real

It sounds like this: "How short on the sides — are we talking skin, or leave some length?" "Where do you want the line, up here by the temple or lower?" "You wearing a beard with this or keeping it clean?" That back-and-forth takes ninety seconds and it's the single biggest predictor of whether you like the result. Skip it and you're trusting the barber to guess, which is fine for a regular but risky for a first visit.

Tipping

20% is standard for a haircut you're happy with, same as most personal services. Push to 25% if your barber solved a problem — grew out an awkward cut from somewhere else, talked you out of a style that wouldn't have worked, ran long to get a beard line right. Cash in hand is preferred over adding it to a card, though card tips work fine if that's what you've got.

The small stuff nobody explains

  • —Show up with clean, dry hair — product buildup makes it harder to see your natural growth pattern.
  • —It's normal for the barber to check both sides in the mirror with you before finishing. Speak up then, not after you've left.
  • —Beard trims are usually a separate add-on, not automatic — ask if you want one at the same visit.
  • —Arrive a few minutes early on a first visit. We're at 2731 N Grand Ave in Santa Ana, Off the 22 Fwy — parking's easy, finding the door on the first try isn't guaranteed.

That's genuinely all there is to it. Book your first cut or look through the full service list if you want to see what's on the menu before you sit down. We're open Mon–Sat 10:00 AM – 8:00 PM and Sun 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM.
